What is an AGM battery?

AGM stands for Absorption Glass Mat, a modern technology in battery manufacturing where the acid is absorbed better and faster by the battery's lead plates.

A thin fiberglass blanket immobilizes the acid between them.

Absorbent glass mat (AGM) separators are used, a material with a consistency similar to molenton. When the battery is assembled and the liquid electrolyte is added, it is absorbed by the AGM fiber, which acts like a sponge.

Like gel batteries, AGM batteries will not leak fluid in case of breakage; this technology also has the advantage that the battery can be installed horizontally.

Differences between a flooded lead-acid battery and an AGM lead-acid battery

• Under normal operating conditions, the internal design of AGM batteries ensures that gas recombination takes place and guarantees that there is no water loss, thus eliminating the need for electrolyte reserves and freeing the user from having to perform maintenance tasks.

• The one-way ventilation system provides partial pressure in each of the cells, ensuring complete airtightness and safe handling.

• The absorption of acid by the fiberglass means that battery packs can operate at higher pressures than batteries with liquid electrolyte, which offers advantages, for example a significant extension of battery cycle life by reducing the removal of the paste.
• Increasing the pressures in the AGM battery pack increases the batteries' resistance to vibration.
• The larger reaction surface ensures greater starting capacity in the same size as conventional liquid electrolyte batteries.
